Landscape Architecture in Tasmania

Situated on one acre of private gardens in South Hobart is the Islington hotel, a lovingly restored mid 1800’s stone cottage which has been developed into a eleven bedroom boutique hotel. A sympathetic renovation to the original cottage respects the past while the new contemporary glass clad structure brings the building up to date and frames the magnificent view of Mount Wellington in the background.

Outside, the development of this hillside cottage into a lux hotel has been led by Landscape Architect Andrew Pfeiffer. A stunning reflection pool provides a tranquil focus to the outdoor space. Sharp spear sculptures which appear to hover over the water illuminate the entertaining area in the evenings and provide an appropriate complement to the contemporary renovation.

The scale of the garden is accentuated with a large deciduous Silver Birch and Weeping Willow which tower over densely planted garden beds. The planting pallete consists of clusters of Rhododendrons and a contrasting mix of perennials, grasses and shrubs providing the colour which bring this cool climate garden to life year round.

The Kitchen garden situated adjacent to the living quarters is edged in traditional Buxus and filled with vegetables and herbs which provide the fresh ingredients for the Chefs seasonal menu.

This amazing garden sits well within the existing built environment and is a joy to relax in. Here are some of the images taken from a recent trip through Tasmania. We look forward to seeing references from this wonderful garden in upcoming projects.
